Aeration of compacted soil

Try to insert a pencil in the soil to a depth of 10 cm (4 inches). If the soil presents much resistance to the movement of the pencil, this is a sign that the soil is compacted. Repeat this test in various parts of the lawn.

Aeration consists of piercing holes 5 cm to 8 cm deep (2-3 inches) in the top layer of the soil, at a density of 10, 000 to 15, 000 per 93 m2 (1000 ft2) of surface area. Ideally, a motorized aerator should be used. Rental units are available at your local garden center.
